The Lottery/Draw Group Matchmaker is a matchmaker service that helps Stanford students find compatible students to form a Lottery/Draw Group for their housing applications. This web site was created and is maintained by Residential & Dining Enterprises staff to give students more control over roommate selection. Unfortunately, our staff cannot assist in the matching process outside of the use of this site. We can't arrange meetings, contact students for you, or get additional information about participating students.
Please remember, this matchmaker service is NOT a part of the housing application itself. It only helps you to find Lottery/Draw group mates.
You need to follow the normal procedures to apply for housing before the deadlines set by Housing Assignment Services.
A Lottery or Draw Group can have two, three, or four members and all must be of the same sex.
Remember to fill out the Roommate Preferences part of the Housing Application even if you apply as part of a Lottery/Draw Group. Someone in your group could leave the group before moving into housing or there may be other reasons that the residence staff will need to match a roommate to you sometime during the coming year.
| Steps to Take | Helpful Tips | |
Step 1
Create an anonymous email account. | Students will contact one another by email. Use an email server such as hotmail.com rather than your Stanford email to preserve your privacy. Some free email servers: hotmail.com, yahoo.com, mail.com, or choose from a list at Emailaddresses.com. (Click on one of these email server names to open a new window and apply for an account.) |
Step 2
Decide on a Screen Name for your Matchmaker Profile. | Your Screen Name should be different from your own name. |
Step 3
Decide on a password. | Don't use your Stanford email password or PIN. |
Step 4
Read the information listed below this table. | Learn about Lottery/Draw Groups and the room assignment process. |
Step 5
Complete a Profile. | The information you enter will be available to anyone who searches the database. Skip any question if you wish to keep the answer private. The default response is "Decline to Answer." |
Step 6
Search for compatible group mates. | Click on any item you consider important in a potential roommate.(The more criteria you select, the smaller the list that will come up.) If you have no preference in a given category, check the "Any is fine" box for that category. |
Step 7
Look at the profiles of students who match you. | When you hit the "Search" button, the system will look for students matching the criteria you have checked off. You will see a list of students matching the criteria. You can click on any Screen Name on the list to see the student's complete Profile. |
Step 8
Contact students you think might make good group mates through their anonymous email. | If you want to meet, we suggest that you set up the first meeting for a public place such as Tresidder Union. |
Step 9
You and your Group Mate(s) need to decide on a unique Lottery/Draw Group Name and apply for housing in the Housing Lottery or Draw. | The Lottery/Draw Group Name must be entirely unique. Use this Lottery/Draw Group name when each of you apply for housing through Housing Assignment Services. Remember, this matchmaker service is NOT a part of your housing application. |
Step 10
Delete your Profile. | When you and your Lottery/Draw Group mates have agreed upon a Lottery/Draw Group Name and have decided to apply for housing as a group, remember to delete your Profile from the database so others won't continue to contact you. |
